How to define processes that can accommodate any PM methodology

A project management methodology is a structured approach or framework used to plan, execute, and control projects.

Having a PM methodology in place means your team has guidelines, processes, and best practices that they can follow to ensure that projects are completed efficiently, within budget, and according to predefined objectives

Types of PM methodologies that businesses use

There are several project management methodologies, each with its own set of principles, processes, and techniques. Some of the most commonly used methodologies include:

Agile: Projects are typically divided into small, manageable increments called sprints or iterations, with frequent feedback loops allowed and opportunities for adaptations and pivots depending on the output. This type of methodology prioritises collaboration, flexibility, and customer satisfaction.

Waterfall: Projects are defined by specific phases, and each phase must be completed before the next phase can begin. This type of methodology tends to be less flexible than ‘agile’, with fewer adaptations made once the project has started.

Lean: A super streamlined process that focuses on maximising volume and minimising waste. This type of methodology works best when teams are being reactive to client needs and delivering immediately, or are delivering repeatable processes where efficiencies can be fed into the next project or cycle.

PRINCE2 (Projects in Controlled Environments): Widely used in the UK and Europe, this type of project management methodology focuses on dividing projects into manageable stages to a set of best practices depending on the roles, and responsibilities of the team to ensure success.

Six Sigma: This is a data-driven methodology that uses statistical tools and techniques to identify and eliminate issues that are causing problems. It’s aimed at reducing defects and variations in processes to achieve near-perfect quality to improve efficiency, save costs and improve customer satisfaction.

Critical Path Method: CPM is a scheduling technique used to plan and manage project activities based on their dependencies and durations. This type of methodology aims at identifying the longest sequence of dependent activities that determine the project’s overall duration – the critical path. This helps project managers to prioritise efficiency and allocate appropriate resources and budgets to ensure projects are completed in the most appropriate time frame.

Hybrid: This is a more fluid form of project management, where methodologies are combined to suit the specific needs of the project. For example, project planning may take a more ‘agile’ approach whereas matters relating to compliance and governance may take on a more ‘waterfall’ approach to planning and delivery.
